Here are four steps to take when asking for a day off:

  1. Review your company’s PTO policy. Before you request time off, it’s best to review your company’s paid time off (PTO) policy.
  2. Look at the company calendar.
  3. Discuss your request with your manager.
  4. Send a formal request.

How do I ask for a day off on short notice?

Remember to ask for the time off, not tell your boss you’re taking time. Include the dates and reason. Within that first sentence or two, include the dates you’re requesting off. If your company follows an accruing paid time off policy, you may want to include how many PTO hours or days this request is.
