How do you get out of living in the barracks?

If you are single (no dependents) you can leave the barracks when you make the rank of Staff Sergeant(E-6). If you are married rank does not matter, most units require you to be at least an NCO (E5 or higher) in order to live out of the barracks.

Can I live off base in the army if I’m single?

Yes, single U.S. military personnel ( enlisted, NCOs, officers) can live off base. They may need their commander’s permission & a Statement of Non-Availability to live off base instead of living in base barracks or bachelor quarters.

Can I live off base as an e4?

It varies from service-to-service and base-to-base, but in general, you can expect to be allowed to move off base and get paid for it, when you make the pay grade of E-4 (over 4 years of service), or E-5. Typical housing allowances will cover all or a majority of the rent for members qualified for it.

Can civilians stay in the barracks?

While visitors cannot stay the night in the barracks, there are accommodations on base, if you choose, for visiting family members and friends, and your service member can stay the night with you.

Who can stay in military lodging?

Army Lodging is available to Active Duty, Retirees, DoD civilians, and their sponsored guests. Air Force Inns are offered to Active Duty, retirees, NAF or DoD civilian employees, and sponsored guests. Coast Guard Recreational Lodging facilities are open to all authorized patrons.

Staff Sergeant/SSG (E-6) Staff sergeants and sergeants have similar duties, except SSGs will be in contact with a larger amount of soldiers and generally have more equipment and property to maintain.

How do I find housing on a military base?

Consult your installation housing office/privatized housing or the Military and Family Support Center relocation assistance staff for information regarding available housing options. Government-owned military installation housing is owned and maintained by the Department of Defense and saves you from paying rent and most utilities.

Do you get housing allowance on active duty in the military?

If you are on orders to serve on active duty for 30 days or more, you’ll receive the full housing allowance rate, the same as active-duty personnel. If you have dependents, you will receive the housing allowance, even when staying in the barracks at basic training or technical school/AIT/A-School.

Do you have to live on base in the military?

Generally, military housing is provided for all service members, whether they’re living on or off base. There may be exceptions to this rule, which you can discuss with a recruiter. Otherwise, with the abundance of housing options, most service members will be able to find housing that fits their needs.

Living in the barracks or dormitories is mandatory during basic training and job-school and your dependents are not allowed to travel to basic training or job school at government expense. During these periods you receive BAH for the area that your dependents reside.
