How do you raise the action on a bass guitar?

Select the proper tool for the adjustment hardware on your bass. Typically, tightening (turning clockwise) bridge height adjusters will raise the action and loosening (turning counterclockwise) bridge adjustment adjusters will lower the action.

How do I know if my bass action is too high?

If there is no access to any sort of truss rod adjustment, then you will probably have to put up with the high action. If there is a bow in the neck, the action will appear higher at higher frets. If you lower the saddles in order to fix that high action, you will get fret buzz at the lower frets.

How high should my bass action be?

Some common action measurements on a bass guitar are around 5/64″ up to about 7/64″.

How much buzz should a bass have?

Put a capo (or elastic band and pencil combo) on fret 1, then press E string at the final fret – the height from string to top of fret at fret 8-9 should be about 0.5mm (0.02″) . If its around there, but not zero, your neck relief is fine. Perfectly straight will give you some buzz. Intonation sounds fine to me too.

Is high action bad bass?

A bass with high action requires more effort and can create problems for younger players who don’t have enough strength to get a good tone. If the action is too low, it will result in string buzzing and you may end up pressing down strings that you don’t intend on.

Should Bass Pickups be level?

They don’t have to be level. If you want more output from the treble side, raise that side of the pickup. On some basses you can raise or lower the pole pieces individually. The pole pieces are the round, magnetic poles under the strings.

How low should my bass action be?

A good rule of thumb is that you can get away with about 1/64 of an inch lower action on the highest-pitched string than what you’ve set your lowest pitched string to. This is because the smaller the string gauge, the tighter the vibrational pattern.

How do you adjust the action on a bass guitar?

Adjust the Action Raise or lower the bridge or the individual string saddles on the bridge. If your bass does not have individual saddle height adjusting screws, you must adjust the action by raising or lowering the entire bridge. Test your action adjustments by playing your bass at each fret.

A good bass setup is all about compromise, and as a guitar technician, you always have to find the best balance between playability and the most amount of fret buzz that you’re willing to tolerate. Some common action measurements on a bass guitar are around 5/64″ up to about 7/64″.

How do I adjust the frets on my bass?

If the frets are straight, try adjusting the action at the bridge. Nearly all basses have a setting somewhere on the saddles that allows height adjustment. Once you have them a comfortable height, or the lowest you can without any buzzing, you will need to check, and possibly, fix the intonation.
