Can you use soft pastels as paint?

Are soft pastels used for drawing or painting? You can do both with soft pastels because the rectangular shape of the pastel sticks allows you to draw lines as well as color in areas. This blurs the boundary between drawing and painting.

What paint to use to repaint dolls?

I prefer Golden brand fluid acrylic paint: a tiny bit lasts a long time. Some people use Liquitex tube paints, but these require much more thinning. If you do choose a craft store brand, Apple Barrel, Folk Art, or Delta are commonly used ones when starting. For a sealer, I use Liquitex matte and gloss.

Some recommend that you coat the dolls’ head in Mr. Super Clear Matte BEFORE painting with an intense color like black to make it easier to get off later. You can also use chalk (non-oil) pastels and real people makeup. You can use these to blush and shadow your doll’s face and/or body.

Firstly, if you’re concerned about preservation and the longevity of your works, I wouldn’t recommend painting acrylics over oil pastels. Acrylics are water-based and don’t mix well with oils. Another problem is that oil pastels never fully dry, because their binder is a non-drying oil.
