How does a queen bee get mated?
When a virgin queen flies to a site where thousands of male honey bees may be waiting, she mates with several males in flight. A male drone will mount the queen and insert his endophallus, ejaculating semen. After several matings during this flight, a queen stores up to 100 million sperm within her oviducts.
Do queen bees get artificially inseminated?
Artificial insemination has been utilized by livestock breeders of farm animals for nearly 70 years, and has been available to queen honeybee breeders for nearly as long. Artificial insemination allows a conscientious queen breeder to control mating and to mate specific drones to specific queens.
Does the queen bee mate with her son?
The sons of queen bees, ants, and wasps (insects collectively known as Hymenoptera) come in two kinds. But male bees, known as drones, are normally “haploid”, produced from the queen’s unfertilised eggs and carrying one set of alleles. The queen can produce them without ever mating.
Do queens mate with their own drones?
A virgin queen bee will never mate inside of her own hive as she needs to take flight to mate. Since she typically mates with up to 15 drones, sometimes she requires more than one mating flight to mate with the right number of drones.

Queen bees mate in the air. The drones fly out of their colonies and gather at a place called a drone congregation area. The virgin queens seem to know where these areas are, and make a “bee-line” there in order to mate. In this area a number of drones mate with the virgin and then drop dead afterward.
Why are bees artificially bred?
It provides a method to control honey bee mating. This technique enables the control of who the queen mates with, the number of drones she mates with and the semen dosage given and stored in her spermatheca. Just because a queen is instrumentally inseminated does not mean she will be superior.
Do bees mate with their mom?
The mating ritual of bees is amazing. Mating takes place up to a mile away from the hive and sometimes 300 feet in the air. The young queen takes her virgin flight to meet with a swarm of drones willing to end their lives just to mate with her once. She will stay fertile for the rest of her life.
