How does a Vickery auction work?

What is a Vickrey Auction? A Vickrey auction is a sealed-bid auction where bidders submit bids without knowing the bids of other people. However, as opposed to other sealed-bid auctions, the price paid is the second-highest bid price and not the winning bid price.

Can the auctioneer refuse the highest bid?

In a with reserve auction, the auctioneer may refuse a higher bid (reserve the right to refuse …) where in a without reserve auction, any higher bid must be accepted. Said another way, in a with reserve auction, the auctioneer is not bound to sell to the highest bidder.

What does increase maximum bid mean?

If you have been outbid –The suggestion to “increase your bid” means that a different bidder is likely to win the item unless you increase your bid to an even higher maximum. If you have not been outbid — The suggestion means that a higher bid might win the auction, if the next bidder does not bid higher than you.
