How does AIP work in submarines?
Air-independent propulsion (AIP), or air-independent power, is any marine propulsion technology that allows a non-nuclear submarine to operate without access to atmospheric oxygen (by surfacing or using a snorkel). AIP can be retrofitted into existing submarine hulls by inserting an additional hull section.
What makes nuclear submarines stealth?
Because nuclear propulsion is independent of air, nuclear submarines have no need to snorkel; when operating on station, they can maintain maximum stealth by staying completely submerged. The nuclear reactor on board a submarine allows it to operate at high speed for long periods of time with unlimited range.
Does the US have non-nuclear submarines?
The U.S. Navy has built and operated exclusively nuclear-powered submarines for the past several decades. Conventional diesel-electric engines are a popular means of propulsion for non-nuclear boats, and there are several AIP options, but hydrogen-powered fuel cells offer more than any other option.
What is the newest class of nuclear submarine?
The first submarine officially began construction on October 1, 2020, and is scheduled to enter service in 2031….Columbia-class submarine.
Class overview | |
---|---|
Length | 560 ft (171 m) |

How does AIP work?
With AIP, a customer can protect files or other resources via encryption at that object level. The file might be stored anywhere, but the ability to open the file is protected by AIP and the access controls specified. Users apply labels to files, which trigger application of policies that protect the file.
Are there undetectable submarines?
Nicknamed the “Silent Service,” submarines are considered the most survivable nuclear weapons -delivery platform. They can stay submerged for weeks or even months at a time, and move relatively undetected while on patrol.
Virginia Block V
When it comes to submarine power, the U.S. Navy’s latest submarine is the Virginia Block V, and on the other side of the Atlantic is Russia’s Yasen-M class. The American submarine can carry more weapons, but the Russian sub can carry more missiles…and hypersonic weapons, according to Naval News.
Is this the world’s first stealth submarine?
German submarine builder TKMS appears to be the first to apply radical stealth shaping. The German Navy (Deutsche Marine) operates a fleet of advanced submarines. The current Type-212A were the first in the world to introduce fuel cell AIP (air independent power).
How can we make submarines more stealthy?
Submarines rely on stealth to maintain the element of surprise and escape threats. For decades this has focused on reducing the noise emitted by the submarine. A resurgence of using active sonar to locate submarines now means that new stealth measures may be required.
What kind of submarines does the German Navy have?
The German Navy (Deutsche Marine) operates a fleet of advanced submarines. The current Type-212A were the first in the world to introduce fuel cell AIP (air independent power). Now two of a newer model, the Type-212CD will be added to the fleet.
How many submarines does Norway want from Germany?
The order for six submarines (2 for Germany, 4 for Norway) is worth around 5.5 billion euros. German shipbuilder Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) is working with a Norwegian partner, Kongsberg. The first boat will be laid down in 2023 and delivered to the Norwegian Navy in 2029.
