How does AIP work in submarines?

Air-independent propulsion (AIP), or air-independent power, is any marine propulsion technology that allows a non-nuclear submarine to operate without access to atmospheric oxygen (by surfacing or using a snorkel). AIP can be retrofitted into existing submarine hulls by inserting an additional hull section.

What makes nuclear submarines stealth?

Because nuclear propulsion is independent of air, nuclear submarines have no need to snorkel; when operating on station, they can maintain maximum stealth by staying completely submerged. The nuclear reactor on board a submarine allows it to operate at high speed for long periods of time with unlimited range.

Does the US have non-nuclear submarines?

How does AIP work?

With AIP, a customer can protect files or other resources via encryption at that object level. The file might be stored anywhere, but the ability to open the file is protected by AIP and the access controls specified. Users apply labels to files, which trigger application of policies that protect the file.
