How effective are heat seeking missiles?

Heat-seekers are extremely effective: 90\% of all United States air combat losses over the past 25 years have been caused by infrared-homing missiles. They are, however, subject to a number of simple countermeasures, most notably by dropping flares behind the target to provide false heat sources.

How far can a heat seeking missile travel?

A Stinger team goes through the procedures they would use to engage an enemy aircraft. The Stinger missile can hit targets flying as high as 11,500 feet (3,500 m), and has a range of about 5 miles (8 km).

How does IR seeker work?

An IR seeker works by using a sensor to search for IR radiation emitted and reflected by potential targets. IR seekers are passive and do not emit signals, unlike active radar seekers, and so there is a reduced chance of detection by the target aircraft’s defensive aid suite.

How fast do heat seeking missiles travel?

Supersonic – A supersonic missile exceeds the speed of sound (Mach 1) but is not faster than Mach-3. Most supersonic missiles travel at a speed between Mach-2 and Mach-3, which is up to 2,300 mph.

How do you detect an IR missile?

To detect approaching missiles, the rocket motor of the missile must be burning – it requires the high effective burning temperatures associated with solid fuel rocket motors. IR-based systems are probably better at altitude but UV is better against surface-to-air missiles.

What does DIRCM mean?

A Directional Infrared Countermeasures (DIRCM) system is required to defeat the latest and future advanced IR threats, and has a lower life cycle cost compared to other IR countermeasure approaches. Simultaneously tracks and defeats threats in clutter environments

What is the best air to air missile in the world?
