How high do commercial propeller planes fly?

Commercial aircraft typically fly between 31,000 and 38,000 feet — about 5.9 to 7.2 miles — high and usually reach their cruising altitudes in the first 10 minutes of a flight, according to Beckman. Planes can fly much higher than this altitude, but that can present safety issues.

Do military jets fly higher than airplanes?

The highest that a commercial airplane can fly is 45,000 feet. Most military planes fly at around 50,000 feet and sometimes higher. Some rocket-powered planes can fly as high as 100,000 feet but they are specially designed for this purpose.

Do airplanes fly at different altitudes?

While most commercial airplanes fly at 30,000 to 36,000 feet, their respective certified maximum altitude is typically slighter higher. Most commercial airplanes have a certified maximum altitude of about 40,000 to 45,000 feet.

What altitude do small planes fly at?

Typically, aircraft fly around 35,000 or 36,000 feet in the air.

Why can jets fly higher than propeller?

One of the reasons private jets fly at a higher altitude than commercial jets is to avoid heavy air traffic. Private jets lack the high-tech sensors and controls of commercial jets, so pilots operating them typically fly at a higher altitude where there’s less traffic.

Why do jet planes fly at such high altitudes?

The air is less dense at higher altitudes, producing less resistance (and in turn less fuel). Jet engines also operate more efficiently at such altitudes. There is a limit to this, though. If altitude is increased too much, then the jet engines will produce less thrust and lift from the wings decreases.

How is the cruising altitude of a plane determined?

Answer: The flight operator files a requested altitude, usually done by the flight dispatcher, based on performance and economics. Air traffic control reviews the flight plan, checking for conflicts. They issue the cruising altitude based on the requested flight plan and other traffic. Pilots fly the altitude assigned by ATC.

How high can commercial aircraft fly?

Commercial aircraft operate around 35,000 to 40,000 feet. Photo: Getty Images Before we get into the reasons, we will look at the limits for commercial aircraft today. All aircraft have a specified ‘service ceiling’ that defines the maximum height that it should be operated at. For most modern commercial jets today, this is around 41,000 feet.

What is the maximum altitude a plane can fly in Florida?

Up to and including FL 410- 1,000 feet. Apply 2,000 feet at or above FL 290 between non-RVSM aircraft and all other aircraft at or above FL 290. Above FL 410- 2,000 feet, except: In oceanic airspace, above FL 450 between a supersonic and any other aircraft- 4,000 feet.
