How is aerosol optical depth measured?

Satellite measurements of aerosols, called aerosol optical thickness, are based on the fact that the particles change the way the atmosphere reflects and absorbs visible and infrared light.

What is aerosol optical depth AOD?

Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) is the measure of aerosols (e.g., urban haze, smoke. particles, desert dust, sea salt) distributed within a column of air from the instrument. (Earth’s surface) to the top of the atmosphere.

How is optical depth measured?

Atmospheric sciences The optical depth of the atmosphere can be divided into several components, ascribed to Rayleigh scattering, aerosols, and gaseous absorption. The optical depth of the atmosphere can be measured with a sun photometer.

What is the unit of AOD?

Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD)

Descriptive Name Aerosol Optical Depth
Coverage Global (over land and water)
Timeliness and Packaging NRT: 3 min frame
Units —
Format 16-byte unsigned integer

What does high optical depth mean?

If the optical depth is large, we say the region is optically thick — light is readily absorbed. If the optical depth is small, the region is optically thin, and light passes through easily.

What is the aerosol index?

The Aerosol Index (AI) is a qualitative index indicating the presence of elevated layers of aerosols with significant absorption. The main aerosol types that cause signals detected in the AI are desert dust, biomass burning and volcanic ash plumes.

How would you describe the general magnitude of aerosol optical depth over northern India?

As AOD increases to 0.5, 1.0, and greater than 3.0, aerosols become so dense that sun is obscured. Sources of aerosols include pollution from factories, smoke from fires, dust from dust storms, sea salt, and volcanic ash and smog.

What does an optical depth of 1 mean?

physical distance (vertical or horizontal), we rescale to a dimensionless coordinate, where optical depth = 1 means that only e-1 = 0.368 of the energy is passed without being extincted (absorbed or scattered) in passing through one unit of optical depth.

What is the optical depth of the Sun?

approximately 1011
The total optical depth of the whole Sun is approximately 1011. Aside from the corona and chromosphere, only a very thin surface of the Sun, the photosphere, is visible (Artymowicz, 2010).

What is dust optical depth?

Aerosol optical depth is a measure of the extinction of the solar beam by dust and haze. In other words, particles in the atmosphere (dust, smoke, pollution) can block sunlight by absorbing or by scattering light. AOD tells us how much direct sunlight is prevented from reaching the ground by these aerosol particles.

What is aerosol layer height?

The TROPOMI Aerosol Layer Height product focuses on retrieval of vertically localised aerosol layers in the free troposphere, such as desert dust, biomass burning aerosol, or volcanic ash plumes. Height information for aerosols in the free troposphere is particularly important for aviation safety.

What is absorbing aerosol index?

The Absorbing Aerosol Index (AAI) indicates the presence of elevated absorbing aerosols in the Earth’s atmosphere. The aerosol types that are mostly seen in the AAI are desert dust and biomass burning aerosols. Below these there are links to all the aerosol data products that are currently available.

What is aerosol optical depth (AOD)?

The key quantity they report is aerosol optical depth (AOD), a measure of the amount of light that aerosols scatter and absorb in the atmosphere (and generally prevent from reaching the surface).

How does aerosol optical thickness affect aerosol measurements?

Satellite measurements of aerosols, called aerosol optical thickness, are based on the fact that the particles change the way the atmosphere reflects and absorbs visible and infrared light. An optical thickness of less than 0.1 (palest yellow) indicates a crystal clear sky with maximum visibility,…

What does AOD stand for in air quality?

AEROSOL OPTICAL DEPTH. Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) is the measure of aerosols (e.g., urban haze, smoke particles, desert dust, sea salt) distributed within a column of air from the instrument (Earth’s surface) to the top of the atmosphere.

How can we measure aerosols from the air?

Land-based and airborne instruments complement NASA’s satellites. AERONET is a global network of sun photometers that measures aerosols from the ground, such as this station in the Canadian Arctic (top). The Global Hawk Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle (bottom) can carry several instruments to measure aerosols from the air.
