How is Taekwondo different from other martial arts?

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that utilizes the hands and feet for blocking and striking. Unlike grappling or wrestling styles like Judo or Jujitsu, the methods for offensive and defensive techniques are strikes and blocks.

Is Taekwondo the most powerful martial art?

As the longest, strongest limb, fighters realized that using legs in combat gave them an edge over other fighting styles that focus on punching. The devastating power of a Taekwondo kick can drop opponents in seconds, and that is the main reason why it is on our list of deadliest martial arts in the world.

Is taekwondo or karate better for self-defense?

Karate also tends to give equal time on foot and hand techniques, whereas Taekwondo focuses entirely on kicks. But when it comes to self-defense, Karate works more on-street self-defense with minimum preparation for tournaments, whereas Taekwondo focuses on tournaments more rather than self-defense.

Is taekwondo a real martial art?

As you will see below, Taekwondo through history was used in many combat situations and was a real and dangerous martial art before it became an Olympic sport. But, in some places, it is still used as a combat sport, and you will see that it is still as dangerous as before.

Can taekwondo be used in the military?

Taekwondo is an evolution of the martial arts system that was used by the soldiers since the Hwarang times (circa 600 AD), where they defended a nation against aggressors. Military use of Taekwondo doesn’t have rules, except to kill.

Why can’t you punch the head in taekwondo?

In a friendly sparring, punching the head was banned because people were breaking their fists. People often think that the “no-punching” rule in the current sports Taekwondo is to protect the opponent—somehow it is cushioning the blows. But it is really to protect the very person who is punching.

Is taekwondo useless for kids?

Any club that advertises a “Junior Dragons” group should be seen as the perfect place to drop the kids off…but not the perfect place to learn how to actually fight. Don’t get me wrong, TKD can teach kids how to get along and all that wonderful social crap so in that sense it is actually not useless.
