Klonopin should not be relied on for prolonged periods of time, and it is safest when used for short durations of time – less than two weeks. If people have been using or abusing the drug for longer and exhibit some of the symptoms of addiction, they are probably dependent on it.

I feel obligated to share my experience with klonopin, as I don’t believe it is safe to take for years and years. I was prescribed klonopin, 0.5 mg, for panic attacks 25 years ago. It worked in conjunction with Paxil for many years. I began having panic attacks again about 13 years ago.
Is it safe to take clonazepam instead of Lunesta at night?
Yes, clonazepam is a good medication to help you sleep at night. While you may become dependent on it as with any benzodiazepine, taken as directed it is a good alternative to Lunesta. Unfortunately over much time, you can become tolerant to the clonazepam too. I wouldn’t worry about that at this time though.
