The short answer is as much as possible. Realistically, however, at least 20 minutes per day should be dedicated to learning a new language. The ideal amount of time to spend on daily study, if you can find the time, is an hour, but you don’t need to cram it all in at once.

Perhaps the best general reference point is the European Common Framework of Reference which divides proficiency into six levels from A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2. In my view, B2 is the level where you are fluent.

It takes around 600 to 700 hours to reach to B2 level – ideally in a French class. If you are lucky to get intensive classes up to B1 – you can get to B1 in 6 to 8 months. Add 6 to 8 months more to reach B2 So around 14 to 16 months if you are good at learning languages, have good budget etc.

Getting from one level of French to the next is increasingly hard and time-consuming i.e. A1 to A2 is easy and fast; A2-B1 is challenging and takes more time; B1-B2 means you have to be perfect in grammar, have an extensive vocabulary and can converse with native Francophones without holding up conversation with “uhms”, “ahhs” and clumsy phrasing.
