In the last year, the USAO has obtained 13 indictments, charging 25 different individuals for their involvement in straw purchases of more than 74 firearms. Some of those firearms were involved in shootings or found in the hands of felons.
Does ATF know when you buy a gun?

Do I need a 4473 form to transfer a firearm?
No. However, the “bound book” must reflect the disposition of the firearm from business inventory to personal use. However, if the business is a corporation, and the firearm is being transferred to a corporate officer or director for other than business purposes, then a Form 4473 must be executed. Does ATF provide information about race or ethnicity of firearm purchasers?
ATF does not, and never has, maintained an archive or other information repository on the race or ethnicity of firearm purchasers or licensees, and it has no intention to do so in the future.
How many cases does the ATF prosecute each year?
2017, of which the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) referred about 12,700 to its field divisions for further investigation. U.S. Attorney’s Offices (USAO) had prosecuted 12 of these cases as of June 2018.
