How soon can you live off base in the Air Force?

How does living off base work?

When you take your BAH off base you are choosing your own house size based on your own preferences. Your BAH is deposited to your bank account and you spend it as you like. In theory, that money will cover the cost of a mortgage or rental as well as renter’s insurance and utilities.

Many bases have a waiting list, ranging from one month to a year for family housing. Therefore, if you want to live on-base, you may have to live off-base for a while when you first get there. In such cases, the military will move your property to your off-base residence, and then move it to your military family housing when you relocate there.

Is it better to live on a base or off?

If you frequently have visitors who are not military family members with ID cards, living on base means getting all of them a pass every time they arrive. And while bases have at least one 24-hour gate, your housing may be near a gate that closes at an early hour or isn’t open at all on holidays, adding major drive time to any trips off base.
