How to check generator output?

Method 1 of 2: Checking the Output Download Article Start your generator. Put the generator’s choke at the START or halfway position. Turn on a voltmeter to the “AC voltage” position. Move the dial on the voltmeter from the OFF position to the position marked for testing AC voltage. Attach the black lead from the voltmeter to the frame of the generator.

Disconnect the negative battery cable with a wrench. Clip the jumper cables to the battery terminals: red to positive,black to negative.

  • Remove the hot (positive) wires from the generator’s field and armature terminals with a wrench and screwdriver.
  • Clip the black (ground) jumper cable to the terminal on the generator marked “field.” Clip the red (positive) jumper cable to the terminal on the generator marked “armature.”
  • Insert the red positive lead from the voltage meter under the red jumper cable clamp.

    Purchase a multimeter. A multimeter can be purchased at a hardware store,online,or at an automotive store.

  • Open the hood of your vehicle. Pull the lever on the inside of your vehicle to pop the hood.
  • Set the multimeter to voltage. Turn the dial or press a button on your ohm or multimeter and set it to voltage.
  • Attach the clamps on your multimeter to the battery terminals. Your battery is near your engine and looks like a plastic box.
  • Read the numerals on the display. With the vehicle off,you should have a little over 12 volts if your battery is working properly.
  • Put your vehicle in park and turn it on. Make sure your vehicle is in park so that you don’t move forward or backward while you test the regulator.
  • Rev the vehicle’s engine. You will need someone else to rev the engine so that you can look at the multimeter as they do it.
  • Read the output on the multimeter. The regulator should cap the output of your battery at around 14.5.

    To test a voltage regulator, purchase a voltage meter. Connect the positive and negative ends of the meter to the positive and negative terminals on the battery. Turn the car on and push down on the accelerator to get a reading.A voltage regulator is a mechanical part that regulates the voltage of electrical equipment in a car.
