Is 3 a passing grade in IB certificate?
Each IB subject is assessed on a scale of 1 – 7 with a score of 4 considered a “passing grade”. This score is calculated based on a combination of internal and external assessments throughout the 11th and 12th grade years.
Can you take 4 HLs in IB?
Normally, the IB requires that you take at least three subjects each at the SL and HL. However, you are allowed to have four subjects at HL, and you need a minimum of 12 points in your HL subjects to receive your diploma.

How many HL and SL subjects should you take in IB?
In the IB, you have to choose three higher level (HL) subjects, and three standard level (SL) subjects. You do, however, have the choice to do four HL subjects and hence two SL subjects. Perhaps you have been contemplating whether you should take three or four HL subjects?
Should I take 4 HL subjects at the same time?
If you take four HL subjects, you will have more work, and hence less time to study per subject. This could adversely affect your performance in the other subjects. This perhaps was my biggest concern.
How many HLS should I take?
So do check the requirements early. If you are interested in taking four higher levels, I recommend that you start off with four HLs, because it is easy to drop down to SL in a subject whenever, but it is not easy to climb up to HL in a subject whenever!
How do I get an IB Diploma?
If you aim to get an IB diploma, then you will need to do more than just choosing HLs and SLs. You will also need to write an Extended Essay (EE), participate in Theory of Knowledge (ToK) and indulge in Creativity, Activity and Service ( CAS ).
