Is art still art if no one sees it?
If your definition includes ‘a shared experience’, then your work is not art unless someone else views/shares it. If your definition does not require your work to be shared, then whatever your create you are free to think of it as ‘art’ – no matter what others may think or say.
Is art still art if it is made for someone other than the artist?
If you copy something line for line, aiming for an exact replica, you haven’t made art. You’ve just made a copy of someone else’s art. It’s a beautiful way to put art into the world and be able to live a good life. Charging for his artwork allows him to make people happy with his art. Without payment, he wouldn’t have the time, because he’d have to pay the bills by working on something else.
Who decides whether an artwork is art or not?
Today, the maker or creator or imaginer or seller of an artwork gets to say whether or not it is art. There are no agreed-upon standards or gatekeepers to decide what is art and what is not art.
Is fear keeping you from making art?
Fear is the bane of all artists everywhere. It’s the voice in our head telling us that we’re not good enough, or that other people are better, or that we’ll never be able to make it as a successful artist. Fear is what keeps us hobbling along, too scared to ask for help, or find a mentor, or even from making art. Rejection is scary. I get it.
