Is ATF the same as power steering?

A lot of people ask, “Is power steering fluid the same as transmission fluid?” While ATF and power steering fluid are both hydraulic fluids, ATF features different modifiers and detergents that are specifically designed to remove dirt and grease from the transmission system.

Can I use engine oil instead of ATF?

The motor oil is designed to function in the engine while the transmission fluid is meant for your steering and gear system. These two fluids have certain similarities, but can I use motor oil for transmission fluid? The simple answer is No.

Just as you would for your car’s oil and antifreeze or brake fluid—as long as you’re mixing the same type of fluid with another of the same type (for example, ATF+ATF). Mixing different types of power steering fluid can cause you to lose your power steering.

Becase of this reason.. you can use transmission fluid in the power steering system, but it is not recommended to use power steering fluid in the transmission..

Some automobiles use transmission fluid as power steering fluid, while newer vehicles use synthetic-based hydraulic fluid that is specifically made for power steering use. The four main automatic transmission fluid types are Mercon , Dexron , Type F and ATF +4.
