Is ISL and BSL the same?

ISL is also used in Northern Ireland, but British Sign Language (BSL) is used there as well. ISL is more similar to American Sign Language and French Sign Language than British Sign Language and is not related to either spoken English or Irish.

Is British Sign Language different from ASL?

Just like ASL, British Sign Language, or BSL, is a visual language used by the Deaf community. As with ASL, BSL also has regional dialects and variations, but unlike ASL, BSL uses two-handed fingerspelling. BSL is considered to be a dialect of BANZSL, or British, Australian, and New Zealand Sign Language.

Is sign language related to British Sign Language?

The type of sign language used the most in Britain is British Sign Language, also known as BSL. Research in 2011 suggested that BSL is used in favour of other sign languages by 145,000 people. Therefore it is not related to the spoken language of English.

How many people speak ISL?

There are approximately 5,000 Deaf people in Ireland who use ISL. However, approximately 40,000 hearing people use ISL, ranging from a regular to occasional usage in Ireland.

Most sign languages systems don’t align with the spoken languages of the environment and tend to be a separate language system. A good example is the difference between American Sign Language (ASL) and British Sign Language (BSL). Both the spoken languages of these communities are the same; they verbally speak in English.

ASL descends from French Sign Language (LSF) while Indian Sign Language descends from British Sign Language (BSL).
