Is it better to learn Makaton or BSL?

Makaton is simpler to use and learn than BSL. Makaton is widely used for very young children who aren’t yet speaking and children with speech, language and learning difficulties.

What are the disadvantages of Makaton?

The main downfall of Makaton signing lies in the fact that the communication partner must also be a speaker of Makaton. Its similarities to BSL widen the number of people who will understand certain parts but Makaton is not an appropriate form of communication to use in everyday social situations.

Can BSL understand Makaton?

The Makaton resources available in the UK use signs from British Sign Language (BSL). This means they are only suitable for use within the UK. Wherever Makaton is used in the world, the signs selected, come from the natural sign language of that country.

Are Makaton and Signalong the same?

What’s the difference? Makaton is based on BSL and was devised by Margaret Walker in the 1970s. It provides a basic means of communication using speech, sign and symbols to encourage language development in children and adults with communication difficulties. Signalong is another system with its own set of signs.

    How similar is Makaton to BSL?

    The Makaton system follows the same grammatical structure as spoken English and is used primarily in the UK, although it has been adopted by 40 other countries. It borrows some signs from BSL, but most are different.
