No, it’s a lack of respect. They may be younger, but they are in a professional role in a position of power. It’s cute you think him being young makes him more equal to you – it doesn’t.

Perhaps the most important reason (from my perspective) is as much about the tone that’s used (and the climate that may be created) when teachers call students “friends.” It’s often said with a sing-song voice, and this may make it feel condescending (although that’s never the intention!).

Is a teacher supposed to be your friend?

Especially in elementary and secondary schools, a teacher isn’t supposed to be your friend, they’re supposed to be someone you look up to and respect. The teacher is there to educate your children and inspire them to be their best. If the children feel they are equal with their teacher, how is a teacher supposed to control an out of hand classroom?
