In the US it is legal for civilians to wear military-style clothing as well as actual military uniforms. There is a federal law on the books that prohibits the wear of military uniforms and insignia.

For just a few hundred dollars it’s possible to buy a complete CADPAT uniform with name badge and rank insignia, making the person wearing it indistinguishable from a real Canadian soldier.

Who uses CADPAT?

The CADPAT uniforms are used by Army, Navy and Air Force personnel. Canadian special forces personnel use the U.S. MultiCam pattern and will continue to wear that camouflage. In September 2019 some 600 troops at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa tested a similar camouflage pattern in the field.

When did Canada adopt CADPAT?

Canadian Temperate Weight digital camouflage pattern, or CADPAT (TW). First introduced in 1996, this pattern is now employed as the standard combat uniform for all Canadian Forces. Within common parlance among some soldiers the pattern is often called “relish.”

Stolen valor and impersonation only take place if you have intentions of doing so, and if you have a genuine uniform. The part that makes CADPAT illegal for a civilian to own is the copyright on the NIR suppressant ink they use to make CADPAT. The pattern itself is not the protected part of a garment.
