Is it sneaky to use Bcc?

Some people still have a negative connotation of the Bcc field. Viewing it as a sneaky or underhanded way to create a paper trail, one that obstructs transparency and violates trust. While some of that may well be true, the majority of uses for Bcc are far from sinister – they’re actually necessary to our daily lives.

Is Bcc passive aggressive?

The worst use of the blind carbon copy is to passively aggressively ensnare a coworker. This kind of BCC abuse crops up when employees resort to using the BCC function as a way of indirectly tattling on their coworkers, sucking up to their boss, or otherwise engaging in dysfunctional workplace hijinks.

Why would you move someone to Bcc?

So to move someone to BCC in an email chain is to ensure that they won’t be part of the conversation going forward. So one of the recipients of his initial email, thoughtfully recognizing this fact, removes him from the conversation. “Thanks, Paul (moving you to BCC),” that person might say.

When you place email addresses in the BCC field of a message, those addresses are invisible to the recipients of the email. Conversely, any email addresses that you place in the To field or the CC field are visible to everyone who receives the message.

Why you should never use Bcc?

I highly recommended not using BCC at work. It is deceitful to lead someone to believe they are the only one receiving an email when they actually aren’t. The CC field does them same thing in a message as the BCC; the CC’d person is on the email but isn’t expected to respond – but it is done in an open honest way.

Should you always Bcc yourself?

simply BCC yourself on emails that you are sending out and you want/need to follow up on. Because you have BCC’ed yourself, the other recipients will not know that you were also a recipient. Or Use a Rule to copy sent emails to your Inbox. You can also setup a Rule to copy ALL emails that you send to your Inbox.

Outlook users can automatically CC or BCC themselves using the email program’s Rules feature. On the Home tab, click Rules > Manage Rules and Alerts. Click New Rule. If you want to apply this rule to all your sent emails, click Next again and Yes in the pop-up window.

Is it bad to BCC someone on all of your emails?

It’s not. In business, integrity and transparency are your most important characteristics. If you’re the type to BCC people on all your emails, you’re not the type of person with whom I want to do business. When people BCC me on emails, I immediately reply to them and tell them to please never use BCC like this again.

If the others that were BCc’d do not know each other, putting their email addresses in the BCc: field to protect the privacy of their email address is the proper thing to do. In business, however, outside of the reasons stated, it is the rare occasion where including others in a conversation is something to be hidden.

How can I find out why someone is using BCC?

The best approach you can take is to try and determine the motive of the sender’s use of BCc:. Is the sender trying to protect the privacy of their contact’s by not exposing their email addresses to others receiving the email whom they may not know?
