Is lifting weights good for BJJ?

Strength training will improve a grappler’s strength-to-weight ratio, reduce injury risk, and slow down the loss of muscle mass as the body ages. All grappling sports require athletes to make a specific weight. Judo, wresting, and Brazilian jiu jitsu all require competitors to weigh in before a competition.

Barbell Training for Muscle Growth

  1. Barbell Bench Press – 3 sets of 10 reps @ 90\% 10RM.
  2. Barbell Bent Over Row – 3 sets of 10 reps @ 90\% 10RM.
  3. Barbell Overhead Press – 3 sets of 8 reps @ 90RM.
  4. Pull ups – 3 sets of 10 (or as many as you can get each set)

Depending on your individual progress and how many times you’re training per week, the first stripe is awarded within around 3-6 months of training. Your coaches will decide on your first stripe based on a few factors; ability to execute techniques, time length you have trained, and the number of classes attended.
