Is smallpox FDA approved?

June 10, 2021 — The FDA has approved a new drug to treat smallpox. Fearful of a possible bioweapon attack, the United States has been steadily preparing a defense through BARDA, the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority. Tecovirimat was the first drug for smallpox, approved in 2018.

  • Tecovirimat. In July 2018, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved tecovirimat (also referred to as ST-246 or its brand name Tpoxx), the first drug with an indication for treatment of smallpox.

TEMBEXA is a prescription medicine used to treat smallpox disease caused by a type of virus called variola virus in adults, children, and infants.

No cure for smallpox exists. In the event of an infection, treatment would focus on relieving symptoms and keeping the person from becoming dehydrated. Antibiotics might be prescribed if the person also develops a bacterial infection in the lungs or on the skin.
