Should I upgrade amp or guitar first?

A good amp will make almost any guitar sound better, so if you’re looking to upgrade your sound or wondering whether to upgrade your guitar or amp, I’d say try out a new amp first. This will highlight any sonic issues with the guitar that may (or may not) be there.

When should I upgrade my guitar amp?

If you’re satisfied with the way your guitar feels and sounds, then an amp upgrade or pedal upgrade may be the answer for you. If you feel like you can get more out of your guitar then you should consider upgrading or getting a new guitar!

Sure that’s where the majority of your attention should go, it makes sense of course. Upgrading your instrument can be a fun way to explore how your guitar works and what makes it all come together. It can add sonic value and improve its tone while also making it a better instrument all around.

Do I need another amp?

You don’t NEED an amplifier at any time. If you don’t care about the sound quality and you are happy to use the system you have, then there’s no reason to buy an aftermarket amplifier. However, if you prefer to experience the music in the way it was intended, then it’s time to make a small investment in an amp.

Upgrades to improve your tone:

  1. Guitar Strings. Your guitar strings are literally the main source of your sound.
  2. Tuners Knobs (Tuner Buttons, Tuner Heads, etc) A good set of tuners can keep you in tune and they can even improve the sustain of your guitar.
  3. The nut.
  4. Electronics.
  5. Pickups.
  6. Bridge.
