Homeless charity Thames Reach advises not giving money to beggars but says: ‘By all means, engage with people on the street. ‘Perhaps buy them food or a cup of tea. It’s demonising the homeless community.

What to do if someone is begging for money?

Acknowledge the beggar. Instead of ignoring them, look at them. Nod, smile, or say hello to show you are aware of their presence. This is a compassionate response that won’t cost you any money.
