A common rule among day traders is to always end their day without any stock positions, so they must sell their positions at the end of the day. Additionally, retail investors trying to avoid day trading rules may purchase stock at the end of the day, so they are free to sell it the next day if they wish.

Why do day traders close positions at end of day?

Traders participate in financial markets by buying and selling stocks, futures, forex, and other securities, and by closing out positions with the intention of making small, frequent gains.

End of day trading takes place between the hours of 2:30 PM EST to 4:00 PM EST. Power hour is considered between 3:00 PM EST to 4:00 PM EST. These hours are when traders come back from lunch and try to make end of day profits and enter into new positions.

Should you sell stocks at the end of the day?

The rationale for selling during this time frame is that most stocks that have been actively trading all day may have already reached their highest level and may therefore be set to decline into the close. By the end of the trading day, most relevant news on any given stock has already been released.

Is it better to trade all day or only during hours?

Of course, everyone has different focus and discipline levels. Some traders might be able to buy and sell all day and do it well, but most do better by trading only during the few hours that are best for day trading. Day trading is not for everyone, and there are many rules and risks involved.

Because this approach only requires placing orders once a day, the very earliest exit wouldn’t be until the next day. You won’t be day trading or making multiple decisions about a single stock throughout the day and because of this, you will have a more relaxed, and hopefully more controlled trading experience.
