Goku did not beat Buu with his own skill. Rather he had to use the energy of others to do so via the spirit bomb. And since Goku has always been at least partially influenced by his desire to get stronger having him end with a new rival that he knows was way stronger than him is truly fitting for his character.
Could Goku have won the fight with the Spirit Bomb?
