What are AMBA protocols?

The Advanced Micro controller Bus Architecture (AMBA) bus protocols is a set of interconnect specifications from ARM that standardizes on chip communication mechanisms between various functional blocks (or IP) for building high performance SOC designs.

Why AMBA APB is used?

Abstract The APB (Advanced peripheral bus) protocol is a part of AMBA(advanced microcontroller bus architecture) family. APB involves low bandwidth, low cost and minimal power consumption and is used to connect the Timer, Keypad and other devices to the bus architecture.

Can APB burst?

AHB has full-duplex parallel communication whereas the APB has massive memory-I/O accesses. The Advanced High-performance Bus is capable of waits, errors, and bursts. The APB is simpler than the AHB. Unlike the AHB, there is no pipelining in APB.

Why is a burst not allowed to cross a 1 kilobyte boundary?

1 kilobyte is the smallest area an AHB slave may occupy in the memory map. Therefore, if a burst did cross a 1 kilobyte boundary, the access could start accessing one slave at the beginning of the burst and then switch to another on the boundary, which must not happen for the above reason.

What are the bus/interfaces in AMBA 4?

The AMBA 4 specification defines following buses/interfaces: AXI Coherency Extensions (ACE) – widely used on the latest ARM Cortex-A processors including Cortex-A7 and Cortex-A15 AXI Coherency Extensions Lite (ACE-Lite) Advanced Extensible Interface 4 (AXI4) Advanced Extensible Interface 4 Lite (AXI4-Lite)

What are arm Amba protocols?

Arm AMBA (Advanced Microcontroller Bus Architecture) protocols are an open standard, on-chip interconnect specification for the connection and management of functional blocks in a SoC. ARM’s developer website includes documentation, tutorials, support resources and more.

What is AMBA 5 Coherent Hub Interface (Chi)?

In 2013 the AMBA 5 Coherent Hub Interface (CHI) specification was introduced, with a re-designed high-speed transport layer and features designed to reduce congestion. These protocols are today the de facto standard for embedded processor bus architectures because they are well documented and can be used without royalties.
