A neutrino can be defined as an elementary subatomic particle with no charge and 1/2 unit spin. They are fermions that react via weak interaction and gravity. Neutrino has rest mass is almost negligible hence considered to be zero. The rest mass of the neutrino is much less in comparison to other elementary particles.

What are the 3 types of neutrinos?

Perhaps the most important thing to know about neutrinos is that they come in three types, or flavors:

  • electron neutrino (νe)

What do neutrinos come from?

Neutrinos are fundamental particles that were first formed in the first second of the early universe, before even atoms could form. They are also continually being produced in the nuclear reactions of stars, like our sun, and nuclear reactions here on earth.

What is antineutrino physics?

An antineutrino is the antiparticle partner of the neutrino, meaning that the antineutrino has the same mass but opposite “charge” of the neutrino. Although neutrinos are electromagnetically neutral (they have no electric charge and no magnetic moment), they may carry another kind of charge: lepton number.

Why do neutrinos oscillate?

Neutrino oscillation occurs when neutrinos have mass and non-zero mixing. This is because the muon neutrinos passing through the earth turn into tau neutrinos. The discovery of neutrino oscillation verified that neutrinos have a small but finite mass.

Why neutrino is called ghost particle?

Neutrinos are called ‘ghost particles’ because their mass is almost zero, they travel at near light-speed, and they don’t really interact with normal matter; to a neutrino, the Universe would be all but incorporeal. When a neutrino interacts with the Antarctic ice, it can create a flash of light.
