What are RoHS regulations?

RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) The RoHS is a directive regulating the manufacture, import and distribution of Electronics and Electrical Equipment (EEE) within the EU, which bans from use 6 different hazardous materials (to date).

What is RoHS compliant material?

What is RoHS? RoHS stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances. RoHS, also known as Directive 2002/95/EC, originated in the European Union and restricts the use of specific hazardous materials found in electrical and electronic products (known as EEE).

What are the restricted materials in electric and electronic products mandated under RoHS?

The RoHS Directive currently restricts the use of ten substances: lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP).

Is RoHS mandatory?

As of 22 July, RoHS is also a compulsory part of the CE declaration. Without CE and RoHS, corresponding products may no longer be sold in the EU (and countries that are adapting to the EU-Directive). An exception is spare parts and parts, which are used for repair.

Is RoHS 3 mandatory?

All applicable products in the EU market since July 1, 2006 must pass RoHS compliance. Directive 2015/863 is known as RoHS 3. RoHS 3 adds four additional restricted substances (phthalates) to the list of six.

What is required for RoHS compliance?

RoHS compliance means that a product has been tested for 10 banned substances by an independent authority, and that the tests confirmed levels of the substances below the RoHS threshold. Under RoHS 3, the latest version of the RoHS directive, the 10 substances restricted are: Cadmium. Lead.

RoHS 3 (EU 2015/863) expands the list of prohibited substances from six to ten by adding four new types of phthalates. Batteries and battery packs are exempt from RoHS regulations; instead, battery manufacturing is governed by the Battery Directive, which contains requirements for labeling and collection.

It requires heavy metals including lead, mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium and flame retardants, such as polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), to be substituted by safer alternatives. In 2011, a New RoHS directive ( 2011/65/EU) came in force.
