What are the different types of steel making process?

Of the three major steelmaking processes—basic oxygen, open hearth, and electric arc—the first two, with few exceptions, use liquid blast-furnace iron and scrap as raw material and the latter uses a solid charge of scrap and DRI.

What is the basic difference between iron making and steel making?

The primary difference between iron and steel is that the former is a metal, whereas the latter is an alloy. Iron is simply a metal element that occurs naturally on Earth. In comparison, steel is a man-made alloy that’s made by mixing iron and carbon together.

What is basicity in steel?

(in metallurgy), the ratio (in percent by weight) of basic and acidic oxides in iron ore materials (iron ore, sinter, and pellets), and also in blast-furnace and steel-smelting slag. Basicity defines the chemical composition and metallurgical properties of such materials.

What is primary steel making process?

Primary steelmaking involves the use of a blower to force oxygen through molten iron, thereby lowering its carbon content while subsequently converting it into steel. Also known as basic oxygen steelmaking, it was invented in the mid 1900s by Swiss engineer Robert Durrer.

Why is basicity important?

The basicity of a molecule is a measure of its ability to accept a proton (H+) to form a stable product. The positive charge is distributed between the three N atoms, which stabilizes the protonated side chain and increases the basicity of the molecule.

What is acidic and basic slag?

The acidic slag contains high amounts of SiO2, Al2O3 which can make the slag thinner. A basic slag contains oxides like MgO and CaO, which makes the slag thicker. FeO is the most important part of the slag in that it causes lime to dissolve at lower temperatures which is called ‘fluxing’.

What is the difference between primary and secondary steel making?

Modern steelmaking processes are broken into two categories: primary and secondary steelmaking. Primary steelmaking uses mostly new iron as the feedstock, usually from a blast furnace. Secondary steelmaking is performed in an electric arc furnace and uses scrap steel as the primary raw material.
