Who enforces federal gun laws?

These laws regulate the manufacture, trade, possession, transfer, record keeping, transport, and destruction of firearms, ammunition, and firearms accessories. They are enforced by state agencies and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Can I get a NICS check on myself?

Only if you buy a firearm through a licensed dealer. They are the only entities authorized to run a NICS check. You cannot do it on your own as private individuals cannot access the system and people who own businesses can’t do it either. NICS is not a general background check system.
