What do batters ask umpires?
On a swing and miss, it is pretty common to ask “was that a strike” and some umpires will tell you some of the time. Asking for the ball/strike count isn’t common but it’s acceptable. Anything that sounds like arguing balls and strikes is going to get, at best, a dirty look and, at worst, an ejection.

Why do batters draw a line?
Drawing a line in baseball means a batter made a line in the dirt with their bat to show where they believe the pitch crossed home plate. Drawing a line generally happens after a batter has struck out and it is considered arguing with the umpire on a called strike, which is grounds for ejection.
What do baseball umpires hold in their hand?
Always hold your indicator in your left hand even if you are right handed. Because you make strike and out calls with your right hand, holding the indicator in your left lessens the chance the indicator “flies” out when you make your call.
Can a home plate umpire overrule a field umpire?
The home plate umpire can overrule other umpires’ calls. No umpire may overrule another umpire’s call. An umpire may, at his discretion, seek out advice or consult with another umpire on a play, but is under no obligation to do so. You must ask for time out before appealing that a runner missed a base.
