What do you mean by traction substation?

A traction substation, traction current converter plant or traction power substation (TPSS) is an electrical substation that converts electric power from the form provided by the electrical power industry for public utility service to an appropriate voltage, current type and frequency to supply railways, trams ( …

What is a railroad substation?

Substations are crucial to the operation of railroads – they convert AC voltage to DC voltage which is safely fed to the third rail out on the tracks. This electrical power then energizes each train’s traction motor, the electric motor which propels the train.

Why 25kV is used in electric traction?

The main reason for 25kV voltage used in railway is, that 25 kV AC more economical than 1.5kV DC voltage system. Since 25kV voltage system has higher voltage, the higher voltage reduces the current flow through conductor; this reflects to reduce the conductor size.

Which traction system is used in India?

Indian railway traction system uses 1.5 kV DC around Bombay and 25Kv ac is used in rest of the country.

Which traction system is best?

In case of heavy trains that require frequent and rapid accelerations, DC traction motors are better choice as compared AC motors. DC train consumes less energy compared to AC unit for operating same service conditions.

What is a distribution station?

Distribution Stations (DS) are used to transfer power from the transmission system to the distribution system for a specific service area. It is uneconomical to directly connect electricity customers to the main transmission network, unless they use large amounts of power.

How many types of substation are there?

The different types of substations mainly include Step-up Type Substation, Step-down Transformer, Distribution, Underground Distribution, Switchyard, Customer Substation, and System Station.

Which motors are used in traction?

List of electric motors used for traction: 1. DC Series Motor 2. DC Shunt Motor 3….Linear Induction Motor.

Why DC current is used in train?

The equipment in the DC traction system is less costly, lighter, and more efficient than an AC traction system. It also causes no electrical interference with nearby communication lines.”

What is railway TrD?

The Full Form of TRD is‍ Traction distribution. The most important challenge of Traction Distribution is to supply electric power to running Locomotive.

Are traction substations a good idea for railway electrification?

Following on from my post on railway electrification voltages, I thought an introduction to traction substations would be a good idea. Traction substations are used to convert electrical power as supplied by the power utility (or rail operators own network) to a form suitable for providing power to a rail system (via third rail or overhead line).

How many traction substations are there in Melbourne?

Scattered around Melbourne’s suburban railway network, 68 traction substations convert 22,000V AC power supplied by electricity companies to the 1500V DC used by trains. The extension of suburban trains to South Morang and Sunbury will add four more. (a different source put the number in 2008 at 67 substations and 23 tie stations)

What is a light rail power supply substation?

Traction Power Supply Substation Light rail transportation systems across the country require power to move their cars along. Commuters depend on these efficient and clean running machines to get them to where they need to go on time.

How are traction substations controlled by SCADA systems?

Balancing devices (Scott transformers, static convertors, etc.) are often used to achieve these limits. Generally traction substations will be controlled by SCADA systems and will likely provide power for auxiliary systems such as signaling and other track side purposes.
