What does a plane say to the pilot when landing?
To indicate the landing clearance or final approach, the Captain will either make the following announcement and/or blink the No Smoking sign. “Flight attendants, prepare for landing please.” “Cabin crew, please take your seats for landing.” It may be followed by an announcement by a flight attendant.
How do pilots know where to go when they land?
All pilots have to do is follow the beams down to 200 feet above the ground, at which point they must be able to see the runway and its approach lights. On a normal instrument approach, one radio beam, called the glide slope, gives pilots the proper descent path, generally 3 to 4 degrees downward.
What altitude do pilots put the gear down?
At that point, landing gear and flaps will be down. Anywhere from about 1,500 feet to 1,000 feet of altitude, the aircraft will have flaps down and will be on autopilot on the 3 degree glide slope.
Can pilot see the runway?
To complete a safe landing, pilots must be able to see the runway at a specific decision height (DH) above the ground. A minimum horizontal visibility is also specified, called the Runway Visual Range, or RVR. The RVR is measured on the ground, and the information given to the pilots before they begin an approach.
When should I put my gear down?
The basic rule is that you change up through the gears as the speed of the car increases and down when you need more power from the engine. For example, you would change down to a lower gear when climbing a hill or pulling away at low speed.
When should I lower my landing gear?
For a landing in reduced visibility requiring flight solely referring to the instruments, the landing gear is usually extended around the final approach fix (around five miles from the runway). This can vary depending on the type of approach being flown.
Do you have to call gear down on a retractable gear aircraft?
For USAF pilots of retractable gear aircraft, it is a required call. Per Air Force Instruction (AFI) 11-202 Volume 3, General Flight Rules: 7.7. Landing Gear Reporting Procedures. Retractable gear aircraft will report gear down status to ATC or runway supervisory unit after extending the landing gear.
Is ATC required to remind aircraft to check wheels down?
1 In the U.S., for Military aircraft, ATC is required to: “Remind aircraft to check wheels down on each approach unless the pilot has previously reported wheels down for that approach”. [ref: [FAA Order 7110.65W], para. 2-1-24]
What should pilots read back from ATC clearances?
Pilots of airborne aircraft should read back those parts of ATC clearances and instructions containing altitude assignments, vectors, or runway assignments as a means of mutual verification.
How does ATC compare to other pilots?
ATC will usually be more patient with you and actually talk to you a little slower to make sure that you understand everything. Other pilots will probably give you more room as well and respect the fact that you are newer. What do you have to lose?
