Why does ALS affect swallowing?
HOW DOES ALS AFFECT SWALLOWING? The ALS disease process involves degeneration of both Upper Motor Neurons (UMN) and Lower Motor Neurons (LMN) . Upper and lower motor neuron degeneration affecting head and neck muscles leads to increased swallowing difficulty and speech that is more difficult to produce and understand.
