Box D: This is a control number that identifies your unique Form W-2 document in your employer’s records. This number is assigned by the company’s payroll processing software. Box E: This identifies your full name. If your name has changed, ask your company to update their records.

Why doesn’t my W-2 have a box D?

It appears that some employers or payroll processors specified to TurboTax that the control number is required for importing, but then did not put a control number on the W-2s. In that case you will not be able to import your W-2. You will have to enter it manually.
