What does Namaskaram mean Bharatanatyam?

Namaskar a prayer/salutation that you do before and after Bharatanatyam dance. Namaskar means you are thanking mother nature and God.

How many levels are there in Bharatanatyam?

A Bharatnatyam performance typically consists of six sections. They are- Alarippu, Jatisvaram, Sabdam, Varnam, Padam and Tillana.

Why do we do Namaskaram?

Namaste or namaskar is used as a respectful form of greeting, acknowledging and welcoming a relative, guest or stranger. In some contexts, Namaste is used by one person to express gratitude for assistance offered or given, and to thank the other person for his or her generous kindness.

How do you do Namaskaram in Temple?

The men have to do sashtaang or full body namaskaram, while the women have to fold their knees during the namaskaram. Namaskarams at temple are not usually offered facing the deity directly. So basically, namaskarams that are North – South(head pointing the North) are okay and East – West are fine too.

To touch the feet of an elder or respectable person, you must bend your upper body in front of them, without bending your knees and stretch your arms forward. The arms should remain parallel and should be stretched in such a way that your right hand touches their left leg and left hand touches their right leg.

Namaskaram refers to the proper way of offering prayer and greetings and seeking blessings to God, Guru and the Audience before starting and after completion of any dance piece.

What is Adavus?

The word “Adavu” means basic step. Adavus forms the ABC’s of pure dancing(Nritta) in bharatanatyam. Just like a combination of alphabets give words and thereafter sentences, adavus are combined to form a dance sequence in Bharatanatyam. An Adavu is the combination of: Hand gestures (nritta hastas)
