What Equipment Do You Need To Train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

  • Gi. A gi is the traditional uniform worn in BJJ and an essential part of training.

What should I wear under my BJJ Gi?

What you wear underneath your judo or BJJ gi is up to you. The main thing to consider is comfort. You can wear training shorts or leggings as well as your favorite athletic t-shirt. You can also wear what’s called a rashguard.

Do you need a rash guard for BJJ?

Whether you train with or without a gi, you will need to have a good rash guard. Your rash guard goes under your gi, and it helps protect your skin from scrapes and skin burns. A rash guard also keeps your body warm and helps your muscles stay supple while grappling.

Compression Shorts/Spats – Regardless of whether you’re going to train only gi, only no-gi, or plan on training both, compression shorts and/or spats is absolutely necessary. For gi training, you will want to wear something under your gi.

Do you wear shirt under GI?

This would typically be a t-shirt or rash guard. If you wear a rash guard, it will be a personal preference in regards to short sleeve or long sleeve. Not that long ago, some academies did not require wearing any clothing under your kimono top and, if you were a man, you could go shirtless.

Do I wear clothes under my gi?

Yes, you need to wear underwear under your gi pants. It’s also not uncommon to wear compression pants or fight shorts under your kimono. At some academies, wearing fight shorts under the kimono makes for an easy transition from gi to no-gi during live training.

BJJ gear bags and gi backpacks are a very functional and practical way to carry your Jiu Jitsu equipment. Sometimes they are even made with the same type of cotton material and weave used in Jiu Jitsu Gis – which means they are very durable and rugged, and they look pretty cool.

Should you wear a rash guard for Jiu Jitsu?

BJJ rash guards are also great to wear even when practicing jiujitsu in the gi. We recommend using a rash guard instead of ruining white t-shirts, which tear easily and keep sweat. A rash guard will last longer and you will feel less grimy after practice.
