What happens if a queen bee gives birth to another queen?

After mating, she will return to the hive. If her mother (the old queen) is still in the hive and nearing the end of her life, the new queen will kill her (called ‘supercedure’). If the old queen has left with a swarm, the new queen will take over laying eggs.

Can bees make a new queen?

Regardless if the queen was lost to swarming, supersedure, or your deadly hive tool, the bees will work on a replacement if they have young enough larvae. Usually the bees can raise a new queen just fine, and a virgin will hatch out of the cell.

First, the queen lays more eggs. Then, the worker bees choose up to twenty of the fertilized eggs, seemingly at random, to be potential new queens. When these eggs hatch, the workers feed the larvae a special food called royal jelly. This helps larvae to grow larger than the drone and worker bee larvae.

How does a bee become a queen bee?

A bee becomes a queen bee thanks to the efforts of the existing worker bees in the hive. A young larva (newly hatched baby insect) is fed special food called “royal jelly” by the worker bees. Royal jelly is richer than the food given to worker larvae, and is necessary for the larva to develop into a fertile queen bee.

Do bees lay eggs or give birth?

The queen, in addition to being the only bee of the colony capable of reproducing and laying eggs, has control over whether she lays males or females. To give birth to a female bee, a queen bee will deposit the egg in an ovum cell which has been fertilized by sperm.

There can only be one queen bee; the strongest. It is important that the surviving queen bee is the most powerful, since she is the one that will transmit her genetic material to more than 2,000 larvae everyday for 3 or 5 years. Once the queen bees fight to death, the surviving queen prepares to be fertilized by the fastest males.

What is the difference between a drone bee and a queen bee?

Male bees, called drone bees, are larger than the worker bees but smaller than the queen bee. Compared to the queen bee and worker bees, the drone bee has an easy life. Its only tasks are to eat and mate with the queen.
