What happens if you put a 4K disc in a Blu-ray player?

No, 4K Bluray is not forwards compatible, primarily because 4K disc image files are encoded with HEVC not the MPEG 4 AVC of standard BluRay. You will need to buy a 4K BluRay player. Fortunately 4K BluRay players are backwards compatible with your legacy standard HD BluRay and even SD DVD discs.

Can 4K Blu-Rays play on normal Blu-Ray players?

Basically, the Ultra HD movies include both the Ultra HD Blu-ray disc version of the film and a normal, 1080p Blu-ray disc you can play on regular players. Check the packaging to see if a standard Blu-ray disc is included, and you might have a version of the film you can watch while you wait on your new player.
