What happens if your uterus lining falls out?

Before your body expels the decidual cast, you may experience bleeding, spotting, and abdominal pain or menstrual cramps, which may be severe. When it’s expelled, a decidual cast will be red or pink. It will be somewhat triangular and close to the size of your uterus.

A decidual cast occurs when the lining of the endometrium is sloughed off in one piece, forming a cast of the uterine cavity. 1 The pain that is associated with passing the decidual cast through the cervix is known as membranous dysmenorrhea.

During ovulation, estrogen thickens the endometrium, while progesterone prepares the uterus for pregnancy. If conception doesn’t occur, progesterone levels drop. The progesterone drop triggers the uterus to shed its lining as a menstrual period.

Spotting that occurs outside of menstruation because of endometriosis can appear as pink or brown tinted discharge. Endometrial tissue that grows outside your uterus and bleeds into your discharge can make your discharge appear in these colors: pink. brown.

Deep endometriosis looks like nodules of various sizes in the affected tissue. Ovarian endometriosis cysts, called endometriomas, are filled with thick brown fluid, and are thus called “chocolate cysts.” Biopsy and microscopic examination of endometriosis lesions is often used to confirm the diagnosis.

The most common signs of excessive endometrial thickness include:

  • bleeding after menopause.
  • extremely heavy or long-lasting bleeding during menstruation.
  • irregular menstrual cycles that last less than 3 weeks or longer than 38 days.
  • spotting between periods.

Is tissue discharge normal?

Although it doesn’t always happen, bleeding and increased vaginal discharge is normal after a procedure to treat fibroids. In some cases, fibroid tissue is passed. This may not cause any problems, but you may need further treatment if there’s: significant bleeding.

It’s perfectly normal to notice some clumps from time to time during your period. These are blood clots that may contain tissue. As the uterus sheds its lining, this tissue leaves the body as a natural part of the menstrual cycle. So clots of tissue are usually nothing to be concerned about.
