What happens when you buy a stock when the market is closed?

Market Orders If you place a market order during extended-hours (9:00 to 9:30 AM or 4:00 – 6:00 PM ET) your order will be valid during extended-hours. If you place a market order when the markets are closed, your order will queue until market open (9:30 AM ET).

Can you buy stocks after market closes?

The post-market session or closing session is open from 3:40 PM to 4:00 PM. During this session, people can place buy/sell orders in equity (delivery segment using the CNC product code) at the market price but do note that even if you place a market order it will be placed on the exchange at the closing price.

If you are looking to be a medium to long term trader/investor then it is quite acceptable to put orders in after market close. Some would say it is even less risky, because you are not watching the price fluctuate up and down and letting your emotions getting the best of you.

What if I buy shares after market closes in India?

After-market orders are also allowed for commodity trading. After-market orders for commodity can be placed anytime during the day, orders will be sent to the exchange at 9:00 AM (MCX opening). So if you place an after market order at 8:59 it will get sent today and if you place it at 9:01 AM it’ll get sent tomorrow.

For U.S. stocks, overnight trading extends after-hour trading until close to the open of the next trading day.
