What is a BSP nipple?

BSP nipples with a parallel thread are used to mate with female BSP threads. BSP nipples are very similar to American pipe nipples, however they are not interchangeable. The thread angle for a BSP Nipple is 55 degrees as opposed to 60 degrees on American Pipe nipples. BSP stands for British Standard Pipe.

What does NPT mean in piping?

The best known and most widely used connection where the pipe thread provides both the mechanical joint and the hydraulic seal is the American National Pipe Tapered Thread, or NPT. NPT has a tapered male and female thread which seals with Teflon tape or jointing compound.

What is BSP pipe fittings?

British Standard Pipe (BSP) is a set of technical standards for screw threads that has been adopted internationally for interconnecting and sealing pipes and fittings by mating an external (male) thread with an internal (female) thread.

What is an NPT nipple?

N.P.T. nipples or National Pipe Threaded nipples or fittings are standard threaded nipples used within the United States. N.P.T. nipples consist of a tapered threading which has “imperfect threads” at the end of the threading. The “imperfect threads” create your seal when connecting a male to a female N.P.T part.

What is a pipe nipple used for?

When it comes to plumbing and piping, a nipple is a fitting that is a short piece of pipe. A nipple is usually provided with a male pipe thread (MPT) connection at each end of the fitting, which are used to make a watertight seal when connecting piping to threaded fittings, valves or equipment.

What are NPT taps used for?

The most common American styles are National Pipe Taper (NPT) and National Pipe Taper Fuel (NPTF). NPT threads are used in mechanical or low-pressure air or fluid applications and the use of sealant or tape is adequate to prevent leakage.

Why is NPT tapered?

The taper on NPT threads allows them to form a seal when torqued as the flanks of the threads compress against each other, as opposed to parallel/straight thread fittings or compression fittings in which the threads merely hold the pieces together and do not provide the seal.

Is NPT same as FIP?

FIP Female Iron Pipe (interchangeable with NPT) FIP, Female Iron Pipe, or Female International Pipe- Similar to FPT, FIP connect NPT pipe together with internal threads. Threads used with NPTF, has external threads for a dry-seal connection.

Are BSP and ISO threads the same?

BSP (British Standard Pipe) threads, using the Whitworth thread form, have been adopted as the ISO standard for pipe threads, and will hereafter be called out as ISO and not as ESP. Taper threads have a 1:16 taper and the same reamers can be used as for NPT threads.

What is the difference between NPT and NPS threads?

Both NPT and NPS have the same thread angle, shape, and pitch (threads per inch). However, NPT threads are tapered and NPS threads are straight (parallel). Both threads have a 60° included angle and have flat peaks and valleys. While NPT and NPS threads will engage, they do not seal properly with each other.
