What is a drone in bees?

Drones are the larger bees hanging around hives. They live there during the spring and summer but regularly leave to find Drone Congregation Areas (DCAs), in the hope of being part of a mating flight. The primary focus for a drone is to mate with a queen.

Do worker bees lay drones?

A laying worker bee is a worker bee that lays unfertilized eggs, usually in the absence of a queen bee. Only drones develop from the eggs of laying worker bees (with some exceptions, see thelytoky).

Why are male bees called drones?

A drone is a male bee that is the product of an unfertilized egg. Drones have bigger eyes and lack stingers. They cannot help defend the hive and they do not have the body parts to collect pollen or nectar, so they cannot contribute to feeding the community. The drone’s only job is to mate with the queen.

Are worker bees sterile?

In most common bee species, worker bees are infertile due to enforced altruistic kin selection, and thus never reproduce. Genetically, a worker bee does not differ from a queen bee and can even become a laying worker bee, but in most species will produce only male (drone) offspring.

Are Queen bees different from worker bees?

The sole difference between a honey bee worker and a queen is in nourishment received during the maturation process: workers feed prospective queens with royal jelly for their entire lives, while worker bees are fed royal jelly only during the first two days of their larval stage.

Can a worker bee produce a queen?

Worker bees replace old or dysfunctional queens by making a new queen from their old queen’s egg. When a queen lays an egg she can lay either an unfertilized or a fertilized egg.

Can a laying worker bee make a queen cell?

Why are worker bees female?

Workers are nevertheless considered female for anatomical and genetic reasons. Genetically, a worker bee does not differ from a queen bee and can even become a laying worker bee, but in most species will produce only male (drone) offspring.

How do you tell a queen bee from a worker bee?

Queen can vary in size, but she is usually only slightly larger than a worker bee. It’s really her shape that distinguishes her. Her abdomen is long and so are her legs. Her wings are short in comparison with her body and do not reach the end of her abdomen.
