What is a good BCS score?

An ideal BCS is 4-5 out of 9. For every number above 5, your pet is an extra 10 percent overweight. For example, a dog with body condition score (BCS) of 7 out of 9 is approximately 20 percent overweight.

BCS scales are typically range from 1-5 or 1-9. At The Drake Center, we use a 1-9 scale. This larger scale allows us to better assess subtle changes in your pet’s weight, but either scale is acceptable. Using this scale, pets are scored from 1 to 9 out of 9 with 5/9 being an ideal body weight.

What is meant by body condition score?

Body condition scoring is a management tool designed to assess body reserves or fat accumulation of an animal. A score of one is assigned to an extremely skinny or emaciated animal, and a score of five is assigned to an extremely fat or obese animal. Horses are typically scored using a nine-point scale, instead.

A dog’s normal body temperature ranges from 101 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit, which is significantly higher to humans whose body temperature ranges from 97.6 to 99.6 F. A temperature of more than 103 F is considered a dog fever.
