What is a good camshaft duration?

A 280-degree-duration cam holds the valves open longer than a 260-degree-duration cam. Holding the valves open longer allows more air and fuel into the engine and also allows more to get out through the exhaust. Longer duration (higher number) improves top-end power but almost always sacrifices low-end torque.

What is the advantage of a camshaft with more lift and duration?

Designing a cam profile with more lift results in increased duration in the high-lift regions where cylinder heads flow the most air. Short duration cams with relatively high valve lift can provide excellent responsiveness, great torque, and good power. But high lift cams are less dependable.

What does a bigger cam shaft do?

A bigger cam will open the intake valve wider, allowing more fuel and air into the cylinder. The larger the cam, the more fuel that is let in. Does Cam Timing Make A Difference? Adjusting the camshafts so the cams are slightly ahead or behind will alter the engine’s performance.

What is considered a mild cam?

An RV or towing camshaft, which is considered a mild performance or an economy cam, will often have a narrower LSA, between 112 and 114 degrees. Hot street camshafts usually have 110- to 112-degree LSA, while high performance and racing camshafts will often run between 105 and 108 degrees.

Does cam duration affect idle?

Again, keeping all else constant, more duration will make the engine less efficient at low rpm, with more overlap dilution of the induction charge, and the later intake valve closing reducing the trapping efficiency. Therefore, a long-duration cam will cause rough running at idle (lope) and a loss of low-rpm torque.

What is cam duration and lift?

Camshaft Duration is the measurement of the time one valve begins to open until it finishes closing. 050 inches, the duration is measured from that point. Intake Duration at . 050 inch Lift – The number of degrees the crankshaft moves while the intake valve is open.

Do camshafts make car louder?

Yes, especially if it has a nice lope to it. All my cammed cars got louder after adding a cam. Yes, it will be louder. The cool factor goes way up to when you hear the choppy idle to!

What is a lot of cam overlap?

To maintain sufficient idle and vacuum qualities, the cam tech recommends the cam be ground on, say, 112-degree LCA, which gives an overlap of 66 degrees. For a typical performance-headed 350, the optimal LCA is usually 108 degrees.

How much HP does a cam add?

Does a camshaft increase horsepower? Yes, a camshaft adds 10 to 20 horsepower depending on the setup. To get the full potential of the high-performance camshaft, you’ll have to swap out additional components like the air intake, exhaust manifold, injectors, and valve heads.

What is a good street cam?

Lobe Separation Angle Generally, a cam with wider LSA (112-116 degrees) offers less overlap between intake and exhaust opening and closing events. Again, much depends on the overall engine combination and intended use, but as a general rule, cams with a 110-to 112- degree LSA offer good power and decent street manners.

What makes a cam sound choppy?

LSA (lobe separation angle) determines the choppiness, it has to do with the overlap of when both valves are open, as in when the exhaust valve is closing and the intake valve is opening to pull fresh fuel in on the intake stroke after pushing out the burnt fuel. Most GM cams come on a 112, 114 or 116 LSA.

What is the difference between short duration and long duration camshafts?

Short duration cams are good for low speed torque and throttle response while long duration cams are best or high revving engines that need to make lots of top end power.

What is a good rpm range for a camshaft?

CAMSHAFT RANGE GUIDE CHART. Operating range 1000-3200 rpm. Operating range 1500-4000 rpm. Good low end and mid range. Operating range 2000-4800 rpm. Operating range 2200-5400 rpm. Good mid range power. Operating range 3200-7500 rpm. Good high rpm range.

How much power does a 240 degree camshaft produce?

A cam with a duration of 240 degrees of higher will typically produce the most power from 3,500 to 7,000 rpm. But there’s more to camshaft selection than lift and duration.

What is the best cam lift for stock engine?

Cams with durations in the 195 to 210 degree range (measured at .050˝ cam lift) are usually considered best for stock unmodified engines and those with computerized engine controls. Once you go beyond 210 to 220 degrees of duration, intake vacuum starts to drop.
